As a new parent, you feel like you are on cloud nine, when you first arrive home with your newborn. However, it does not take long before you begin to feel overwhelmed.  Your newborn’s needs of sleeping, eating, diaper changes, and being cuddled and loved, begin to take root.  Your stress levels start to increase.

Here are some tips to successfully parenting a newborn:

  • Before you leave the hospital, after the birth of your baby be sure to have all of your questions answered.  If this is your first baby, you will have lots of questions.  The staff at the hospital will be very helpful to you and will answer any questions you have, regarding breastfeeding, formula intake, bathing, cord care etc. You will feel more comfortable upon leaving when you have made the arrangements for your baby’s first doctor’s appointment, and know that you have a number to call if in case you have further questions.
  • One of the best kept secrets of newborn care is to have all of the essentials for both you and the baby ready before you leave to deliver your baby.  This will be a life saver when you arrive home from the hospital with your newborn.  The last thing you will want to worry about when you arrive home with your bundle of joy, is do you have enough diapers or burb rags.  Make sure you have all the essentials ready to go – such as swaddling blankets, bottles, onesies, diapers, breastfeeding supplies, snacks for mommy, and other essentials that will make life easier.
  • You will experience an emotional rollercoaster upon your arrival home with your newborn.  It is important for both you and your newborn to carve out some alone time.  Make sure that you share your concerns, emotions and excitement with your partner, as the support will be needed during this time of adjustment.  Only when you are able to take care of yourself, can you fully take care of your newborn.

Remember that being a new parent can be overwhelming, but an exciting time.  You will learn to adjust to a new schedule and the new demands of your newborn.  Keep the tips above in mind during your transition and you will feel less stress.  Less stress will translate to a more enjoyable experience with your newborn.
