Stem cells have delivered many medical breakthroughs and incredible stories of survival in the past few years. One recent success story is that of seven-year-old Tucker Beau Hyatt, who has started to make a full recovery after his stem cell treatment.
Only 18 months ago, Tucker was having trouble walking because of a condition called juvenile arthritis. The condition caused inflammation in his joints which made it extremely painful to walk. All of his joints were affected including his feet, knees, elbows, wrists and back. Today, Tucker is enjoying playing sports again after a rapid recovery after stem cell treatment.
Tucker is one of the youngest patients to have received a stem cell transplant in America. His parents are overjoyed at Tuckers amazing recovery after his stem cell treatment and thankful he can get back to enjoying his childhood.
Doctors tried a number of conventional drug treatments before considering this experimental therapy. It was offered by Celltex, a biotechnology company based in Houston, Texas.
The procedure involves stem cells being removed from the patient’s abdomen. They are then multiplied in a laboratory before being transplanted back into the patient. The stem cells go on to reduce inflammation by targeting sick cells throughout the body.
The Chief Scientific Officer from Celltex, Dr. Jane Young, suggests that the regenerative power of stem cells may used to treat other auto immune conditions. But it’s not considered mainstream medical practice yet — the treatment is not yet approved by the FDA, so patients must travel to Mexico to receive it.
Tucker’s family saw significant changes within three months, when he was able to walk longer distances and climb stairs. He is also starting to put on more weight and returning to his normal self — playful and cheeky!
Clinical trials for the procedure are expected soon. If successful, the procedure will be made available in the United States, helping thousands of arthritis sufferers.
