conquering-arthritis-from-herbs-to-stem-cells

Alexandra R. Bunyak, MD has published a new article discussing the therapeutic options available to arthritis sufferers using of stem cells. Arthritis is a degenerative inflammatory condition that affects the joints. It is a painful and debilitating condition that affects approximately 350 million people worldwide.

The two most common forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degeneration of the joint cartilage and underlying bone. It is more common amongst older people. It carries less inflammation than rheumatoid arthritis, but it can severely limit mobility and lead to a bony overgrowth on some joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis causes more inflammation in the joints and can lead to painful deformities.  Rheumatoid arthritis often affects the wrists, ankles, feet and fingers. Rheumatoid arthritis is associated with systemic autoimmune disease.

People have been using a number of remedies to decrease the symptoms of arthritis with varying success. Some forms of arthritis can be addressed with surgery, however some joints do not have an effective replacement option available.

There are a number of techniques which can be used to reduce the symptoms of arthritis including: more physical activity, anti-inflammatory supplements, holistic treatments, nutritional optimisation and therapeutic laser therapy.

Scientists have also developed a treatment using stem cells to combat both forms of arthritis.  This treatment involves using a patient’s own stem cells, which are processed then injected into the affected joint.

In addition to stem cells, platelet rich plasma injections can be used to treat arthritis. These therapies naturally stimulate the body’s healing mechanisms and focus them upon the arthritis-affected joints.  Research has shown that these treatments can improve the stability of joints and regrow cartilage.

Treatment using stem cells appear to be the most effective way to combat arthritis, with a success rate of over 90%
