Jan28-Keep-Newborn-Warm-at-Night-Winter

Whether you’re out and about or going to sleep, you need to ensure that you’re helping your baby stay warm. However, keeping them warm whilst not overheating can sometimes be more difficult than you realise. So how do you keep your newborn warm during those cold winter nights? Read this article for some useful tips.

Night clothes

Think about what pajamas you’re dressing your baby in to sleep. An all-in-one cotton onesie is a great choice, especially if it has little feet attached that can help to keep their toes warm. You may also find that some come with attached mittens which are perfect for when it’s really cold outside.

If you’re concerned that it’s too cold for them, you can also add a thin vest underneath their sleep-suit but it’s always better to put your child to sleep when they’re a little cool, rather than warm as this can increase the risk of SIDS.

Bedding

Bedding is incredibly important when putting your newborn to sleep, and it’s vital that you choose an appropriate mattress and fitted bed sheets. Loose fitting bed sheets or a mattress that is too soft can increase the risk of SIDS and suffocation whilst they sleep.

However, you may find that your baby wriggles a lot in the night, so a sleeping bag is a good alternative and will keep them warm no matter how much they move about. They’re also a good alternative for babies who don’t like to be swaddled.

Room temperature

It’s wise to invest in a room thermometer so you can monitor the temperature of their room. Ideally, you want it to be between 16° and 20° with 18° being ideal (Ideal temperature may vary based on the country you live in). Anything too hot or too cold can make your baby restless, uncomfortable and increase the risk of SIDS.

Make it cosy

A cosy sleeping environment will not only help your baby to sleep better, but it will also keep them warm. There are a number of things you can do to make it feel cosy, including adding some blankets to the crib, however, you will need to monitor the number of blankets based on how warm or cold the room is.

Alternatively, a great option is to warm their bed up with a hot water bottle or microwaveable pad before you put them to sleep. It is important, though, that you ensure it’s removed before putting them in the crib.

Creating a cosy atmosphere like this will also help them to feel safe and secure, and potentially help them get to sleep quicker.

A combination of all these tips, depending on what your baby likes or dislikes, will help to keep them warm and enable them to have a peaceful night’s sleep. It will also put your mind at rest that baby is warm enough, without being too hot.
