Whether it’s winter or summer, your baby’s skin is very delicate and requires special care to prevent chapping and rashes. Not only does this keep your newborn happy, but it also means you don’t have to deal with the stress of an unhappy baby. So what should you be doing when taking care of your newborn’s skin during the cold weather?
Moisturise
It’s incredibly important that you regularly moisturise your baby’s skin, especially after a bath when it’s most likely to dry out. If left, their skin will dry out and chap, and become very painful. In order to preserve the softness, be sure to regularly moisturise with a baby friendly lotion. This is particularly important in the winter months where your baby is at a higher risk of dry skin from constantly going outside into the cold and then inside into the warm.
Tackle eczema
Eczema is very common with babies, but it’s vital that you tackle it head on to minimise their discomfort and to prevent it from getting worst. Be sure to moisturise the area and treat it with an ointment. There are some great over the counter eczema creams that you can buy so it may be worth speaking to your doctor or a pharmacist if it gets worse.
Don’t forget sunscreen
It may seem crazy, but your baby can get snow burn in the winter due to 85% of the sun’s rays being reflected off the snow. If left unprotected, this can lead to your baby suffering from sunburn. Just as you would in the summer, be sure to include sunscreen in your baby’s going out routine to help protect their skin. Choose a high factor sunscreen, preferably one that contains physical blockers such as titanium dioxide.

Layer up
When it’s cold outside, it’s important that you layer up and keep your baby warm. But be sure that each layer is made of a breathable material. When you are layering up, remember to dress them in one more layer than you’re wearing but it’s wise to closely monitor their temperature anyway in case they’re in danger from overheating which could lead to heat rash.
Invest in a humidifier
The central heating in your home is likely to cause a dryness in your baby’s skin as it takes a lot of the moisture out of the air. In order to prevent this developing into dry or chapped skin, put some moisture back into the air with a humidifier.
Invest in a humidifier and turn it on in their room whilst their sleeping. This will help to maintain a more comfortable level of moisture in the air and also protect your baby’s skin at the same time.
Diaper rash
Diaper rash is more likely to occur during the winter months, so in order to prevent it, it’s important you change your baby’s soiled diaper as soon as possible. It may also be a good idea to let your baby be naked every now and again to allow the skin around their bum to get some air, and prevent diaper rash from developing.
