Our lives have been change by Covid-19 and many of us are having to do things that we wouldn’t normally do or changing our usual routines to something entirely different. For parents this has meant that we are spending the majority of our time at home, with our children.
We are responsible for their entertainment, keeping them calm and also their education too. It might be relatively easy to think of ways to keep them entertained and relatively happy during the lockdown, but education, that is a whole new area to many parents.
It can be hard to know the best ways to keep your children engaged with their learning, especially since many of us are not qualified teachers. So, how do we do it? How do we keep children learning while staying at home during the Covid-19 pandemic when they might not feel motivated?
Keep to a routine
Many children cope much better when they know what is happening next, what their routine is. Therefore, if there is anything that you can do to help them to keep on track of their learning, it is putting together a routine. Of course, you need to make sure that it works for you, keeping in mind your own working pattern. But the main idea is to ensure that you come up with a plan that you can follow each day to keep you both on track.
Remember it is hard for you both
This is uncertain times for us all, whether we are adults or children. We often think that our children are not impacted by the things that happen in the world around them, but they are. Therefore, it is vitally important that you are patient with them during the lockdown period, as well as being patient with yourself. You were never meant to be their teacher, aside from the life lessons that they need to learn, and they were never meant to be your pupil. So, be kind to one another.

Don’t try to put too much into one day
We are tempted to try and fit as much as we can into every single day, however, this really isn’t possible. It is a much better idea to take the day in much smaller chunks and try to do as much as you can in those short periods. You will definitely feel the benefit of trying to focus on the quality of what you are doing together rather than how much you get into each day.
Speak to your child’s teachers
Your child’s teacher is qualified to do what they do and they will know plenty about how best to approach education for your child. This means that if you are finding it hard, or your children is lacking motivation, that you may want to do your best to speak to your child’s teacher. They can give you some useful pointers, speak to your child and just put your mind at rest that you are doing what you can already.
We don’t know what the future will bring, but we know that if we try our best to educate our children and focus on what we can do for them in the here and now, then that is all that we can do and that is more than enough.
