Tips on How to Stay Cool at Night While Pregnant

Staying cool during the day is one thing but keeping cool at night is a problem most pregnant mums-to-be experience throughout their pregnancy. More of an issue during the summer months, keeping cool at night is vital to getting a good night’s sleep and can become an infuriating battle when you’re hot and flustered. Here are some of our best tips on how to keep cool at night during your pregnancy period.

Rethink your nightwear

If you’re waking up in the middle of the night and your nightwear is clinging to you uncomfortably, then you need to rethink what it is you’re wearing. Take a look at the material your PJs are made from; cotton is the best material as it’s lightweight and absorbs sweat.

Use summer sheets

Many people often forget to swap their summer and winter sheets over, so if you’re struggling to sleep at night, then be sure to check this. Consider taking away your duvet completely and sleeping with just a light sheet or blanket to help combat the night time sweats.

Buy a fan

If you’re still struggling to keep cool at night, then it may be time to invest in a fan. Depending on how much you want to spend, you could get a simple one that will circulate the air in your bedroom to help you keep cool, or you could invest in something slightly more high tech that will actually cool the room. Similarly a dehumidifier might also be the answer depending on your circumstances.

Cool your room

You may find that a fan isn’t helping and this could be because the temperature in your room is just too high. Use a thermometer to determine what the temperature is and then take measures to cool it at night. This could involve opening a window or decluttering. Ideally, you’re looking for a temperature between 16 and 18 degrees. Anything higher than this and you may have found the cause of your sleeping difficulties.

Stay hydrated

It’s wise not to eat or drink right before you go to bed as this can not only interrupt your sleep, it can also cause you to go to the bathroom multiple times during the night. Likewise, not drinking enough can also cause you to experience a restless night’s sleep so make sure to strike a balance. Drink plenty throughout the day at regular intervals and avoid too much fluid right before bed.

By trying out these tips, you should find that you’re able to keep cool at night and therefore enjoy an uninterrupted night’s sleep. However, if you find that you’re still struggling to keep cool despite having tried all these tips, then it may be worth speaking to your doctor for additional advice.
