Why You Should Think About Alkalizing Your Body During Pregnancy

If you’re looking into the properties of alkaline water, then it’s likely that you already know about the health benefits it can provide your body. During pregnancy, these benefits are even greater, as discussed in our article ‘How you can benefit from alkalizing your diet during pregnancy.’ Although the benefits themselves are appealing, it’s important for mums-to-be to know why alkalizing your body during pregnancy is important.

The importance of a good pH balance

The pH balance of our bodies is vital to the successful growth of cells, tissues, organs, and essentially the whole body.

Each organ has its own preference as to what the ideal pH level is and your body works continuously to provide the perfect balance to each organ. Most organs prefer a more alkaline environment whilst the skin and stomach prefer a slightly more acidic one.

By maintaining the ideal pH level in different parts of our bodies, we can feel healthier and these health benefits are obvious in our day to day lives:

  • Better hydration
  • More energetic
  • More mentally alert
  • Less prone to disease and infection

But why is this particularly important for women who are pregnant?

Bringing a child into the world may be an incredible experience, however it isn’t one without its side effects. During the pregnancy, the mother’s pH levels will become acidic and thus throwing off the pH levels of the whole body, creating a particularly acidic environment.

Why does this happen?

This mainly happens for two reasons:

  • A foetus requires alkaline minerals in order to grow and develop. The only place in which to get this resource is from the mother’s body, thus causing her pH levels to drop toward acidic.
  • The waste produced by the foetus after the nutrients have been absorbed are expelled into the placenta and gather there. Mother and baby don’t share blood vessels and, as a result, the toxic waste created by this process can’t be expelled from the mother’s body via the blood cells in the same way that she rids herself of toxicity. And this also adds to the change in pH levels.

Possible issues if not neutralised

If the build-up acid in the mother’s body isn’t neutralised to a more alkaline pH, this can cause a variety of issues; including an increase in dehydration and a lack of energy.

Dyspepsia is a condition that occurs during pregnancy due to acid reflux, and one that is likely to occur in an acidic environment. This is caused when acid in the stomach leaks up and into the oesophagus, causing heartburn, upper abdominal pain and nausea or vomiting.

The value of alkaline water

Drinking alkaline water such as Kangen Water® can help to neutralize this acidity in the mother’s body and provide a more balanced pH level. This can also prevent conditions such as dyspepsia from developing and provide the mother with other additional health benefits as well.

In order for your baby to develop correctly and be healthy, the mother needs to provide all the necessary nutrients, and the first step in being able to do this is taking care of herself first.
