Many exciting new stem cell discoveries have occurred in the past few years.  Scientists have discovered that stem cells may be useful for treating spinal injuries, autoimmune diseases, blindness, breast cancer, and many other medical conditions that are currently incurable.

The number of new stem cell discoveries is set to increase in coming years, thanks to the launch of a new stem cell research centre, called the Center for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine.  It is a project of The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine.

The research efforts carried out at this new laboratory will focus on tissue regeneration and stem cell biology.  They are particularly interested in using stem cells to repair diseased organs and tissues.  The centre will work in conjunction with many colleges and departments from the University of Illinois.

Researchers working at the centre will explore the relationship between molecular signals and stem cells.  They are particularly interested in understanding how stem cells mature into other types of cells, including blood, blood vessel, and heart cells.

Other areas of the research that will be performed at the centre include transplanting engineered cells, transplanting engineers organs and tissue, producing more stem cells in a laboratory setting, and learning more about the epigenetic regulation of stem cells.

The centre will use a multidisciplinary approach with scientists from many different fields contributing to the work.  Dr. Asrar Malik will be guiding the research efforts at the new centre.  He expects that the research centre will provide many new stem cell discoveries in the coming years.
